Appalachian Spring, a ballet by Aaron Copland. The Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Serge Koussevitzky. This is the premier recording of Appalachian Spring, dating from 1945, the year following the ballet's first performance.
Conductor Artur Rodzinski commissioned Copland to write an orchestral suite from the ballet score. Koussevitzky and the BSO promptly made a recording. Note that there are four performing versions of Appalachian Spring: 1944 (13-player complete), 1945 (orchestral suite), 1954 (orchestral complete) and 1972 (13-player suite).
